New Moon Eclipse

images

July brings us one of the most powerful New Moons we’ve seen in a while, as it is also a total Solar Eclipse. Although only a small portion of the world will actually see the eclipse, we will all feel it.

A New or Full Moon is an astrological aspect (conjunction or opposition, respectively) between the Sun and Moon. An eclipse is the same aspect involving not only Sun and Moon, but Mother Earth as well. We – Earth and her children – are not only viewing an aspect, feeling it’s effects, we are part of it.

Eclipse are feared and dreaded by many. To be fair, they bring their share of chaos and crisis. They are guaranteed to be markers of dramatic change. Eclipses are powerful – and power can be problematic. That does not mean eclipses are an ill omen, or an event of evil energy. Just the opposite. The awesome power of an eclipse is that of Mother Earth. As she joins in the event (New or Full Moon), it’s level of energy and power are magnified – dramatically.

New Moon is the conjunction – occurring when the Sun and Moon are in the same place. Under a Solar eclipse, the Sun, Moon and Earth join. For a brief moment (actually the Total Eclipse lasts 5 minutes), the energies are perfectly aligned, the portals open, the Deities merging… We are reminded that we are one with Mother Earth; one with fellow man; one with the universe.

This Eclipse falls in the Moon-ruled sign of Cancer, enhancing the deep, emotional, spiritual (Lunar) energies. Eclipses mark change, and this one may mean change at a very deep soul-level. Beneath the conscious mind, beneath what we the subconscious mind, runs a deeper and more potent current. One that can’t be labeled ‘mind’ as there is no logic, no thoughts formed of words, no facts-and-figures calculation. This Moon speaks to the heart, soul, spirit, and emotional body.

The strongest aspect to this Moon is a sextile to Mars. The sextile, (considered a harmonious aspect of opportunity) is an active aspect – it stirs things up, although in a good way. Mars is a planet of action, and currently occupying the ever-practical Virgo. While the most significant effects may be taking place at a level the conscious mind can’t comprehend this aspect give the perfect outlet for manifestation.

You may feel the effect on your mood, thoughts, intentions and actions in a very grounded, decisive way. You may find yourself suddenly having a crystal clear perspective on certain situations; finding the determination to eliminate or pursue something you’ve needed to for a long time; focusing – or fixating – on some need in your life… There are many possibilities, including the possibility of external rather than internal effects. If you are not able or willing to face your challenges – whatever they may be – you may find them rising up in front of you so there is no choice but to face them.

Whatever conscious, physical, manifested effects you notice, remember they are a reflection of the deeper, emotional evolutionary effects. If you are ridding your life of something (or someone) with a great passion, chances are you’ve purged yourself of some deep-down negativity that you aren’t even aware of. If you are pursuing a brand new goal with excitement and enthusiasm, chances are you have opened a ‘door’ internally. The Eclipse-Mars sextile encourages us to take immediate and efficient action to synchronize our physical/conscious existence with the evolution of spirit/soul.

What house in your natal chart this Eclipse falls in can give you an idea of where in your life it is likely to effect. Here are a few (on MANY examples to give you an idea)

2nd house: money, resources, skills, tools and supplies,

3rd house: learning, teaching, siblings, neighbors, books, chants,

The Glyph of the Moon

SilMoon

The symbol of the Moon depicts the crescent of the soul, touching it’s reflection. Like the Sun, this is symbolic of it’s function in out universe, as well as our charts. The Moon reflects the light of the Sun down to earth, and her constant connection with the earth is evidenced by the tides of the sea, as well as the astrological influences. In astrology the Moon is representative of the soul; she is our intuition when we are in touch with guiding forces, and our actions reflect unknown or unseen circumstances. This is also where we find compassion and empathy, as we reflect and connect with what others are feeling.

Summer Solstice Astrology

CROSS Summer Solstice is always an important event, and a powerful time. As the wheel turns past Midsummer, we say farewell to the growing, waxing half of the year. The maximum light has been reached, and nightfall begins to take a bit bigger bite out of each day. In astrological terms, Summer Solstice occurs when the Sun reaches zero degrees Cancer.

This year as the Sun moves from Gemini to Cancer, he will aspect Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto. These four planets are forming a powerful, long-lasting (because they are slow moving) aspect known as a T-square. For a few days the Sun becomes part of this configuration, forming an even more powerful aspect known as a Grand Cross.

The Grand Cross is a configuration of four points 90 degrees apart forming a cross. It is made up of two oppositions, and four squares. In this case, the four points are the cusps of the cardinal signs. These are the points the Sun crosses at the seasonal Sabbats; (0° Aries – Spring Equinox, 0° Cancer – Summer Solstice, 0° Libra – Autumn Equinox, 0° Capricorn – Winter Solstice). These are power points, astrologically as well as in the Wheel of the Year.

This configuration is by far the strongest astrological influence at work on Summer Solstice (it will be triggered by the other seasonal Sabbats, as well). A Grand Cross is a configuration of tension, and challenges. It’s generally considered to be quite difficult although, like all challenges, it is an opportunity in disguise.

The tension of an aspect configuration lies in the clashing energies of the signs involved. To understand the nature of the energies involved here, simply think of the Wheel of the Year – and the vastly different nature of the four seasonal Sabbats.

Jupiter and Uranus recently entered Aries – the Zodiac point the Sun crosses at Spring Equinox. They bring the energy of new life, rampant growth, spontaneity, activity, light and Fire Element. Saturn, though retrograded back into Virgo, has been hovering on the cusp of Libra. This is the Point of Autumn Equinox. He brings the energies of harvest time, wisdom, practicality, darkness and the Air element. In Spring nature is ‘winding up’ and in fall she is ‘winding down’. In the many cycles and phases of the many parts of our lives, we can find ourselves in the winding up or down stage of something at pretty much any given time – sometimes simultaneously, creating clashes.

Pluto has just recently entered Capricorn, the point of Winter Solstice. He carries a bit of the energy of Yule-time. He brings a focus to the quiet darkness, home and hearth, re-birth, the strength and power within, and the Earth Element. The Sun, of course, is at the point of Summer Solstice – creating a natural tension as he forms opposition to Pluto.

Exactly how and where these aspects effect your life depends on your chart and current circumstances. However, with this many conflicting energies at work, odds are your attention and ‘primary focus’ are divided – possible many ways. Some of the things you choose to put aside may well need more attention than they are getting. This season could be a bit of a juggling act, making it difficult to not drop the ball somewhere.

Typically, around the Sabbats, we are intensely focused on that particular spoke of the wheel. This year may call for a little more attention to the entire wheel. In other words, try to step back and look at the big picture. Whether the primary focus of your life at the moment is your spiritual development, financial situation, relationships, striving to reach goals or any number of other topics – look at the whole picture.

The greatest challenge for most of us will be integration. All the parts of your life, all the directions your time and attention are being pulled may seem unrelated and (at least somewhat) incompatible. This is where it pays to step back and look at the big picture.

This is a time to reflect on the concept of oneness. It is a basic Pagan concept we are one with the Earth, the Universe, each other – each of us a small piece of a bigger picture. This incarnation is only a chapter in the evolution of the soul. Karma brings the energies of days long past to surface in the present, and carries the seeds we plant today into the future. All is connected, inevitably and eternally intertwined like an intricate Celtic Knot. Think about this, and ask yourself if it’s really possible for all the details and priorities of your current situation to be so disconnected.

Gemini New Moon

nm

Jupiter and Uranus entering Aries has provided a burst of energy, lighting the fire so to speak. They have set the stage well for Saturday’s busy Gemini New Moon

Naturally, New Moon is when we turn our attention to new starts, new projects, and new ideas. Gemini puts a definite emphasis on the new ideas. It might be wise to keep a memo book handy for jotting down all those random thoughts and plans – especially if this Moon aspects your natal Mercury.

Gemini energy is prone to be scattered and busy, like the highly active, often hectic days of early summertime. This is the last sign the Sun passes through in the Spring season. All the abundant growth and new life of Spring is just beginning to mature, and beginning to choose a path in life. The world just seems to open up with infinite possibility and opportunity. The natural tendency of Gemini is to explore, experiment, think, learn and experience.

New Moon occurs at 21 degrees Gemini – approaching a trine to Neptune and square to Saturn.

The trine, a harmonious aspect, serves to soften some of the potential for hectic chaos in the Waxing Moon. Neptune provides a creative, spiritual, and freely flowing quality – as well an increase in mental Air energy (as Neptune is in Libra).

The square, a challenging aspect, will put a few bumps in the road. Saturn, being the planet of boundaries, can put a damper on new plans or making changes. This square may be just what is needed to bring some of the restrictions and interference to the surface, where it can be addressed – likely with some clever and creative solutions.

While this New Moon, and the following waxing period hold tremendous potential, there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. The biggest one is scattering your forces. With a rush of new ideas and enthusiasm it can be quite easy to charge forward, full steam ahead – in all directions. The obvious result of this, is little accomplished in any direction.

Overall, with a little caution and common sense, this Moon is teeming with opportunity. Whatever you are trying to accomplish, or get started – take it and run with it (wisely).

It is an excellent time for any information and communication related endeavors. This includes the magickal and spiritual realms. This Moon and waxing phase are good for divination, writing your own chants/spells, contacting spirit guides (or other spirits), making or purchasing magickal inks and papers, any spells involving a written ‘wish’, making talismans, and spells using predominantly Fire and Air elements.

Changing Tides – Neptune Retrograde, Saturn Direct

This month began with a major shift in energies with Saturn turning direct, and Neptune turning retrograde at the end of May. Talk about turning things upside-down (or maybe more like inside out)

These two slow moving planets have fairly long retrograde periods, and even longer direct periods. For most of the year practical, analytical Saturn has focused his attention inward while dreamy, intuitive Neptune has focused outward. Now the tides have turned.

Saturn is the great teacher, though his methods are often undesirable. Rewards of wisdom, maturity and strength wait at the end of a long and difficult journey. If we refuse to learn his lessons, we can always appeal to the other side of Saturn for comfort. Then we can sink into comfortable apathy, depression, bitterness…

Retrogrades of Saturn are a time of intense inner focus. Depending on your chart this may or may not be a conscious process. However, odds are over the last few months you have learned a little about yourself in the last few months. Perhaps you revisited some old hurts and disappointments; considered your ability to take on challenging new opportunities; contemplated where you went wrong, or were wronged in the past. Now the question is what did you learn?

A Saturn retrograde can leave you feeling as if you’ve been through an emotional wringer if it touches sensitive point in your chart. Even if it doesn’t you may still feel a bit of this. The challenge is to take all of that new insight and use it wisely. Shore up your weak spots, let go of the old baggage you’ve dredged up and let past follies guide you around future pitfalls – all the while dodging the feeling that it’s too much, too hard, or too depressing. A wisely navigated Saturn retrograde leads to greater strength and maturity.

Meanwhile, Neptune has been direct – focused outward. He is the imaginative, creative, soulful, spiritual, sympathetic, empathetic, and sometimes gullible dreamer of the cosmos. Direct is the natural motion of the planets – onward, upward, forward, and outward is the natural direction of progress and evolution.

Neptune’s influence promotes the awareness of subtlety and possibility. Opposite of Saturn in many ways, Neptune resists boundaries and erodes walls. There are no certainties, facts or impossibilities in Neptune’s world. He is the cosmic ‘checks and balances’ for narrow mindedness. He is also the planet of oneness, blurring the lines between the seen and unseen, this world and the other world, Mother Earth and her children, one person and another – just as he blurs the lines between fact and fiction, reality and imagination.

While Saturn has been testing and challenging our inner selves, Neptune has continued in his normal direct manner softening the outer world. Now they have swapped. Retrograding Neptune encourages us to explore the inner planes in a gentle, flowing often subconscious process vastly different from Saturn’s harsh scrutiny.

A Neptune retrograde turns inner awareness toward the subtle, spiritual, and uncertain. It sparks the imagination and stirs dreams or fantasies sidelined by Saturn’s all-business approach. If you feel like you haven’t cut yourself any slack, let your mind wander, and let yourself dream in a long time – you probably haven’t!

Now that Saturn is direct, and Neptune retrograde there is a bit more of a tendency to get serious with what you are doing. There is a more intense focus on the practicalities and realities of your current situation, surroundings, habits, relationships etc.

A renewed sense of inner strength, and determination in forward momentum can be harnessed into a formidable force for progress in the external world, especially after Jupiter enters fiery Aries on the 5th. At the same time, Neptune is exploring the possibilities of mind, spirit, and soul. This brings an opportunity to overcome circumstance, lack of confidence, lack of resources or whatever ‘practicality’ has been holding you back.

In the best case scenario, we can go with the flow in an energy shift like this and work miracles. Sometimes all we need is the creativity to solve a problem, the belief that it’s not really impossible, or the spiritual grounding to gather power. However, Neptune’s creative force can venture into bizarre, and faith in possible can turn to foolishness. Be careful not to waste a great deal of effort, energy and enthusiasm on a Neptunian delusion.

This shift will likely benefit those with ‘bleeding heart’ tendencies. Neptune retrograding pulls the compassionate, changeable, understanding sympathetic focus inward a bit. We are less likely to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, while taking more time to contemplate how it really feels to be in our own shoes. However, those with more self-centered or hardened tendencies may have to try a bit harder to be understanding and open-minded to other’s needs.

Neptune retrograde decreases the natural connection, not only between people but also between us and other worlds. Neptune is one of the most important planets in spiritual, psychic and esoteric matters. His retrogrades, turning the focus inward, are a perfect time for connecting with one’s own spirit and soul. It is good for developing skills, exploring paths, chakra work, power building… the list goes on and on. It just makes connection and communication with other entities/worlds a bit more challenging.

In magickal practice, it may be a little harder to call desired entities (not impossible at all, just a little more static than usual), but Neptune retrogrades often heighten personal power and spiritual energy plenty to compensate.

Full Moon in Sagittarius

sagmoon This Sagittarius Full Moon promises to be high energy, and high impact.

Full Moon is a time of illumination, not only the literal illumination of the night sky but also symbolic illumination. It marks the mid-point in the Lunar cycle. The increase of light has reached a climax; it is time to reveal what has been building. This Moon has something much bigger than a monthly event to reveal – it sets the stage for Uranus entering Aries.

Uranus, a slow moving planet hasn’t passed through Aries in over 80 years. Although he will remain in Aries for about 7 years, there are times when the effects are particularly strong. One of those time is the moment (and a few days surrounding it) when he crosses the cusp – less than three hours after Full Moon. Combine this with a Moon trine to Uranus bout 12 hours before and the result is a very Uranian Full Moon!

Aries – the new home of Uranus, and Sagittarius -the sign of this Moon are both signs of the Fire Element. When Fire is strong energy levels run strong. This is the element of both creation and destruction, the element of purification and rebirth. Under this Moon, we find an opportunity to release the past, and embrace the future.

Change is the only constant. This is a simple truth, often quoted and rarely taken to heart. All too often we spend our time, energy, and power trying to maintain what we have and where we are. Even worse, we try to go back.

The most logical part of our minds know time progresses – there is no such thing as "exactly as it was". The most intuitive part of our spirits are aware that change and evolution are constant, inevitable, and natural. Yet sometimes we still refuse to embrace the new and release the old. That is the challenge set forth by this Moon.

The Sagittarius Moon is restless and adventurous. She guides us toward new horizons, and new experiences. She is a happy hostess to the Uranus ingress (changing of Zodiac signs) for he is the planet of change, taking on the persona of a groundbreaking pioneer.

This is a good time to look around at where you really are; not where you were, where you could be or where you should be. There is a reason we use the term path so often in describing the soul’s journey through this incarnation. The path of life, the chosen spiritual path – they are long and winding, with many crossroads and unexpected turns. They are also one-way travel. You have to move forward, and if you do so while looking backwards, you will trip and fall before long. Focus on where you are, and where you can go from here.

This Moon is more about possibilities than about plans. Sagittarius tends to wander, and wherever Uranus is involved we must prepare for an element of surprise. Forget the closed doors. Look at the open ones, all of them. Look at the door within your reach of opening. Wherever this Moon falls in your chart, you will find many. It’s a time for exploring, experimenting and experiencing. It’s a time for growth and learning.

This is a very powerful Moon for magickal workings. The greatest power is in the realms of change, release, banishment, wall-breaking, empowerment and purification. The Fire element is strong, as well as the planets Jupiter, Mars and Uranus.

Uranus entering Aries – the Winds of Change are blowing

1URAN With Uranus entering Aries in a few days, the concept of a fresh start or clean slate is likely to be a common theme in many situations.

Ruled by the ever impatient and eager Mars, this sign hosts Spring Equinox each year. When the Sun enters Aries, we celebrate Ostara. The barren landscape of Winter is suddenly bursting with new life.

The restlessness of Spring Fever is ingrained in this sign – and soon it will host Uranus, the planet of change. Uranus is not often associated with subtle change. Turmoil, chaos, sudden reversals, and even crisis are more his territory.

One of the most common expressions used to describe the effects of Uranus is "expect the unexpected." For the next seven years, he will be bringing us the unexpected from the fiery and volatile sign of the warrior.

When you see the storm moving across the radar map, you know there is some turmoil and destruction around it, wherever it goes. Uranus is a bit like that; as he travels through the Zodiac, and through the houses of your chart, the stormy winds of change swirl around him wherever he goes.

In Aries, those winds blow strong and change direction quickly. Uranus is the planet of the rebel; the cosmic freedom fighter. Now working with the vigor, vitality and pioneering spirit of Aries he brings a surge of forward momentum. We will see a focus on whatever is new, innovative, and different.

While Uranus may be charging into Aries chanting "out with the old, and in with the new" he is not without opposition. Literally. In July, Saturn opposes Uranus for the final time in a series of oppositions began in 2008.

In many ways Saturn is naturally opposite in nature of Uranus. The old, stable, strong, traditional, restrictive, inflexible, reliable… Those kinds of things are Saturn’s territory. Expect the next several months to bring conflicts between the safety of the known and the potential of the unknown.

Wherever this transit falls in your chart, expect a bit of turmoil, and maybe a few fresh starts or clean slates you weren’t anticipating. Just remember, when the winds of change blow watch for opportunities to drift in.

Welcome (or welcome back) to the Astro Magickal blog.

If it looks just a little different, it is. Due to a glitch in changing webhosts, I lost my archived posts as well as having to recreate my design. So, I’m starting over.

This is my blog reborn – cleansed of messy code, and purged of old posts. I look at it as a fresh start, rather than a loss of time invested.

Starting over, with anything can be both daunting and rewarding. It is often something we would never have chosen to do, yet we end up grateful for the opportunity. The subject of fresh starts also goes hand in hand with Uranus’s transit into Aries – a fitting topic for my first post on my (unexpectedly) new blog.
